Do you want a tasty and fast appetizer for your party that your guests will dream about? How about a “Date in a Blanket” for a change instead of a “Pig in a Blanket”?…ha, ha… This is such an easy, quick and delicious appetizer it’s almost a “non –recipe”, and so good with the sweet flavors of the date with the smoky & salty bacon. It’s so addictive in fact that I was catering a party long ago for regular clients in Los Gatos and there was a guest there visiting from Sacramento and he told me that he knew that the dates were going to be served again at that party and he wished he could take a bucket of them home with him…ha, ha…move over fried chicken! You can put almonds inside the date if you like, that is always nice…but I stopped doing that because a few guests thought that they were pits. Regardless of the endless recipes that are out there regarding stuffing the dates with various things and wrapping them with bacon, one thing in common…they are all good but I like to keep it simple.
To prevent the picks from burning, soak them in hot water before using them
This party had a country chic decor theme, I love the copper
Dates Wrapped In Bacon
These are a favorite little tid bit that I serve at my parties and all the guests eat them up in a hurry...the sweet dates combined with the smoky bacon will have you craving buckets of them!
Ingredients
- 1 lb regular sliced bacon, not the thick variety
- 30 to 40 pitted dates
- 30 to 40 tooth picks or short bamboo skewers
Instructions
-
Preheat oven to 400 degrees
-
Place tooth picks or short bamboo skewers in a glass of hot water
-
Cut the entire package of bacon in half
-
Roll each date in a half piece of bacon and secure with pick
-
Bake on parchment lined sheet pan for approximately 20 to 25 minutes or until brown and crispy
-
Makes 30 to 40 dates, depending on the thickness or how many slices you have in a package
Recipe Notes
Use regular sliced bacon and not the thick variety, otherwise it would take too long to cook and might burn or the date would shrink too much.
For variety, you can stuff the dates with almonds first and then wrap with bacon
